BANGALORE: People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), announced that it has launched a signature campaign for the deletion of Sedition law, Section 124(a) of Indian Penal Code. This law was enforced by the British during their colonial rule over India, to suppress any movements or agitations raised by the then freedom fighters against the policies and rules laid by British. The members of the organisation stated that under this law, many prominent people of Indian freedom movement were convicted, and was proved unnecessary in the democratic context of the country. This, in turn, acts against the constitutional right of freedom of speech, which hence, cannot not be tolerated under any circumstances. They also mentioned that many countries in the world such as UK and New Zealand have abolished this sedition law for citizens’ welfare.
