THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thousands of graduates who are waiting for the Public Service Commission (PSC) notification for the Secretariat assistants posts, expected to be issued by the year-end, are anxious about the modification brought about in the qualification for the post.It was only recently that the government modified the qualification for the post as graduation from a recognised university with 50 per cent or above marks in science subjects or 45 per cent or above marks in arts subjects and a Diploma in Computer Application (DCA) obtained after a course, the duration of which is not less than six months, or its equivalent course recognised by the government. The PSC’s indecision in announcing the names of institutions recognised by it has been a major concern to the thousands of candidates waiting for the notification. In spite of repeated requests by large number of prospective candidates, the PSC has not yet announced the names of the institutes. In view of the decision to add DCA as eligibility, the large number of computer institutes, which had been facing a decline in their business, have suddenly found their business prospects looking up. With the possibility of large number of graduates rushing for admission to the DCA course with six months duration, the institutes have increased the course fees from Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000. However, the students are apprehensive about the recognition of the course.Pradeep, of Attingal who is planning to write the exam for the Secretariat assistant’s post for the second time, said that he was worried about the delay in PSC naming the recognised institutions."Even if I acquire a diploma from an institute within six months, I won’t be sure whether it will have the recognition till the PSC makes it clear,’’ he said.  He said the PSC had not made it clear whether BTech, MCA and PGDCA degree holders also needed to acquire the DCA to comply with the eligibility criteria. When this apprehension was brought to the notice of K V Salahudeen, the former PSC chairman, during his farewell press conference here the other day, he tried to down play the issue."Large number of DCA holders are already there. Let them get recruited this time. Those who don’t have it (DCA) may try next time after obtaining the diploma,’’ he said. He was, however, clueless about whether the PGDCA and MCA degree holders also required to obtain the DCA. He said the new chairman would take a decision on this.Any further delay in naming the recognised institutes and taking a decision on those having higher qualification will result in hundreds of youths, who are on the verge of becoming over aged to be considered for  the post, loosing the last chance to appear for the examination.
