Prevent hunger deaths in Bundelkhand, CM Akhilesh Yadav tells officials
UP Chief Minister orders a slew of measures after CNN-IBN aired a series of reports on the Bundelkhand famine.

Lucknow: The Akhilesh Yadav government on Wednesday directed district magistrates to begin relief measures with immediate effect in the Bundelkhand region, a week after CNN-IBN aired a series of reports on the famine and suffering there.

The chief minister gave them strict orders to ensure that no hunger-related deaths take place in Bundelkhand and that DMs would be held personally responsible for any such incident.

More funds have been allocated to distressed families in the state budget and employment days under MNREGA have been increased from 100 to 150. The Officials have been directed to submit report within 15 days.

These slew of measures came after CNN-IBN exposed the plight of drought-hit Bundelkhand farmers in a series of hard-hitting reports.

The reports showed how due to consecutive years of scanty rainfall and hailstorms which destroyed crops lives of millions of people in the region were hit. People in many areas were surviving merely on roti and salt and lakhs were migrating to other regions to survive.

The Akhilesh Yadav government has been receiving flak from opposition parties for allowing 17 UP MLAs to go on a 3-nation tour of Japan, Australia and New Zealand for 18 days even while people in Bundelkhand were battling famine.
