THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: When Sree Ganesh team, the winners in the Presidents’ Trophy Boat Race held at Kollam recently, lifted the trophy, they would never have thought that a duplicate trophy would hit markets to decorate the homes of people just five days after the race. But the miniature trophies are all set for sale at the ongoing Artisans’ Development Corporation Handicrafts Exhibition at the Institution of Engineers campus in the city. The President’s trophy made of wood and marble are displayed at the exhibition. The trophies, modelled on the Ashoka Pillar, are made out of Gemelina Arborea wood (‘Kumbil’). The models come in various sizes, 10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm and 30 cm.  The trophies, made at Gundalpet in Karnataka, have been brought here by the Rose Handicraft shop at Anayara. “We were astonished to discover that the new show pieces from Karnataka were exactly like the trophy presented  at the President’s Trophy Boat Race. We ordered 50 pieces for this exhibition and  this particular item is arriving in the market for the first time,” said Lohidasan R, a craftsman with Rose Handicraft.  The prices for the astonishing show piece are Rs 300 for the 10 cm trophy, Rs 600 for the 15 cm one, Rs 825 for the 20 cm trophy and Rs 1,250 for the biggest one. The marble piece, a 7-cm trophy, costs Rs 350.  “We were very careful in selecting the products for display at the exhibition. We have selected different products that were exhibited in former years and from the other exhibitions in the city. The miniature President’s trophy is a truly different one, ” said B Muralidharan, Public Relations Officer of the exhibition.
