New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday congratulated ISRO for its push in the direction of manned space missions with the successful launch of the GSLV-Mark III rocket as he hailed the feat as an "important landmark" in India's space programme.

In his message to ISRO Chairman Dr K Radhakrishnan, the President said "the launch of GSLV-Mark III is an important landmark in our space programme and demonstrates, yet again, India's growing capabilities in space launch technology".

He asked the Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman to convey his greetings to scientists, engineers, technologists and all others involved in the mission.

"Please accept my heartiest congratulations to your team and you at ISRO for the successful launch of India's latest generation rocket-Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, carrying the 'Crew Module Atmospheric Re-entry Experiment (CARE)'. I wish your future endeavours continued success," he said.

Taking baby steps towards realising India's ambition to send humans into space, ISRO successfully tested the atmospheric re-entry of a crew module after its heaviest launch vehicle GSLV Mk-III blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
