The fate of the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated link road project hangs in the balance as the National Highway Authority of India is awaiting the Tamil Nadu government’s response to the NHAI’s technical report. I G Reddy, NHAI Chief General Manager (Technical), Tamil Nadu and Kerala told Express that they had submitted a technical justification report to the State government for the alignment it has proposed for the Rs 1,800 crore project about six months ago.
In a fervent appeal to South Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to help resume the work, he said the project would help decongest Poonamallee road. “We have added entry and exit ramps for general use also. The project conceived 10 years ago can be completed in two years if we are allowed work,” Reddy said.
The Water Resources Department on March last directed the NHAI to stop work on the elevated road project, stating that that pile caps constructed for the project obstructed the free flow of water in the Cooum. It also stated that the alignment of the elevated road was not along the bank of the river but on the waterways.
