Union Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal said that the academic standards were poor in not just engineering colleges of the state, but also in good number of medical colleges.
Inaugurating the Quilon Christian College run by the Christian Service Society (CSS) at Poovanpuzha in Kavanadu near here on Sunday, the minister said that the High Court had ordered the closing down of 15 engineering colleges with poor academic standards and a similar dismal situation exists in the medical education sector of the state also.
“Everything was dispensed in the education sector over petty politics and this resulted in the decline of quality in higher education.
“The state with high literacy trails behind states such as Bihar and Tamil Nadu when it comes to competitive examinations owing to poor quality of higher education,” he said.
Noting that the aim behind education has become merely securing marks, Venugopal said that the situation had reached such a stage that high pass percentage and marks in secondary education are being claimed as government’s achievements.
Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman presided over. CSS chairman C E Fernandez was felicitated at the function.
