HYDERABAD: The state government on Wednesday awarded a contract worth Rs. 4,717 crore to SEW, an infrastructure and construction company, to execute four major components of the Polavaram irrigation project. The government claimed it made a saving of Rs 600 crore by conducting the tender process for the contract in a transparent manner.SEW was the lowest bidder for the four works, quoting 12.6 per cent less than the total value of the work.SEW emerged the lowest bidder among the four firms that had been short-listed from a total of seven companies which filed tenders for the works.The works for the contracts that were awarded to SEW are: spillway, head work, earth-cum-rock fill dam and excavation of hydel generation block.The government said it has saved Rs 600 crore, enough to bankroll its new pet Rs 1 per kilogram rice scheme for at least a year, through the tendering process.The Polavaram project is intended to create a new ayacut of 7.2 lakh acres and stabilisation of 25 lakh acres of the ayacut in the Krishna and Godavari delta. The project will generate 960 mw of power and provide drinking water facility to 500 villages, sources said.
