New Delhi: In tandem with Delhi government's initiatve to promote energy conservation in the national Capital, the Centre has started to light up 25 key buildings, including Rashtrapati Bhawan, PMO and Rail Bhawan, with energy efficient Compact Flouroscent Lamps (CFL).

"We have replaced bulbs with CFLs in four buildings including Rashtrapati Bhawan and Prime Minister's Office. In total, 25 buildings that house Central Government offices would be switched to energy saving devices soon," Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Director General Ajay Mathur told PTI.

Besides the President's abode and PMO, the Shram Shakti Bhawan - where Union Power Ministry is located - and the Transport Bhawan - which houses Shipping, Road Transport and Tourism ministeries - have been switched to CFLs.

The BEE has conducted energy audit of four other buildings including Sanchar Bhawan, Mathur said, adding that audits of all the 25 buildings would be completed by March 2007.

In addition to CFLs, these buildings would also have energy efficient air conditioning system, he added.

Mathur said at present these buildings spend as much as Rs 70 lakh per month to pay electricity bills and could save 20-30 per cent with the use of CFLs.

The BEE is working with the CPWD, which maintains Government buildings, in this project.

However, the Bureau has roped in private electrical equipment and service providers, he said, adding the private firms would not be given any upfront payment but paid from the savings that are accrued.
