TIRUNELVELI: The People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) on Monday announced that a black flag protest would be staged at Idinthikarai on March 15, to protest DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s campaign trip to Sankarankoil for the bypoll.PMANE coordinator SP Udayakumar told reporters here, “Since Karunanidhi supported the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant Project (KKNPP), we will show black flags to him at Idinthakarai on March 15, when he comes for poll campaign.” Charging that Karunanidhi did nothing when Tamils were killed in Lanka, he said the DMK chief showed a lot of interest in getting plum posts for his family in the Union Cabinet. Karunanidhi, who did not care about the anti-KKNPP protest for the last seven months, now spoke in favour of KKNPP “keeping in mind the bypoll.” He also blamed the present power crisis prevailing in the TN to the hurdles created by the DMK and the Centre, which, according to Udayakumar, was preventing TN from getting its demand of 1,000 MW of power and funds for renewable energy.Reiterating his demand to close down the KKNPP, “which threatened the livelihood of fishermen,” he said that fishermen across TN would not go for fishing on March 15. “They will hoist black flags in their villages on the day,” he added.Further, intellectuals and anti-nuclear activists from north India and Kerala would come to Idinthakarai on Thursday to take part in a conference and visit nearby villages the following day, Udayakumar said. “Maya Koyabashi of Fukushima will address the people via video conference.” He also announced that on March 18, youth from the southern districts will conduct a day-long fast and conference at Idinthakarai.
