Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) women workers and supporters at Thekkinkadu ground in Kerala’s Thrissur district on Wednesday will mark the beginning of the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign in the state.
At the meeting, being seen as a display of Stree Shakti, women workers will congratulate the PM on bringing in the women’s reservation bill. The PM will also hold a road show for about one-and-a-half km from Swaraj to Thekkinkadu ground. BJP State President K Surendran said that women from different walks of life will attend the event.
The venue, Thrissur, is of significance. It is one of the six Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala where the BJP has high hopes. Actor Suresh Gopi, who had contested previously from this constituency, is most likely the BJP candidate from here. Gopi has been working in the Lok Sabha constituency since the last elections. Although he stood third, he was able to increase the vote share of the BJP.
Moreover, Thrissur also has a significant Christian population. The BJP has been trying to reach out to the community and has been organising several visits during Christmas and Easter. The Prime Minister met representatives from the Christian community on Christmas.
Although the Manipur violence has been a setback for this outreach, the BJP hopes to succeed in its efforts.
Kerala has around 18% Christian population, which makes the meet and effort important. Apart from Thrissur, other constituencies where the BJP has high hopes are Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta Mavelikkara, Palakkad and Attingal.
