BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Samaja Trust on Monday held a progamme at the Vivekananda Education Centre on the occasion of the World Environment Day. The programme was inaugurated by freedom fighter H S Doreswamy by planting a sapling. The main aim of the programme was to honour the people who have given their service for the protection of the environment.Dr M S Thimmappa, educationist and former vice chancellor of Bangalore University presided over the function. Senior ecologist A N Yellappa Reddy; Krishna Byregowda, the MLA of Byatarayanapura constituency, Dr Mahesh Joshi, Deputy Chief Director, Doordharshan Kendra, Bangalore and other VIPs also participated in the function.A N Yellappa Reddy, Senior ecologist received the Green India Award. K N Lakshman Gowda, president, Kannada Kattey, Bangalore received the Parisara Rathna Award, K Gopal, secretary, All Karnataka Children’s Association received the Environment Protection Service Award. Srimanth Polytechnic, Mysore, received the Green Award. Forty six students from different schools were given Student Environment Award. Five students from different schools received Certificate of Exellency.The Bharatiya Samaja Seva Trust, in the year 2003 had submitted a memorandum requesting for a plastic-free-Bangalore, and again in the year 2008. And, on the occasion of World Environment Day they submitted a memorandum requesting for a plastic-free-Karnataka, to Rameshwar Thakur who was the governor of Karnataka those days.“Still Karnataka is kept in the dark because no measures have been taken yet to protect the environment. And, oxygen availability is decreasing day by day. Everyone should protect the natural resources. Even students have to practically get involved in protecting the environment and the government has to support these types of efforts for a better future,” said environmentalist Shivamallu.
