Plan to make city truly green
Plan to make city truly green

If the Kerala State Biodiversity Board has its way, this city of Ananthapuri is going to turn a bright green.  Cities occupy a mere two per cent of the Earth’s surface, yet the inhabitants of the city guzzle up 75 per cent or more of the planet’s natural resources. This is because cities depend on their surrounding ecosystems for goods and services.

While unchecked and unmanaged urban growth will place increased pressures on vulnerable social and ecological systems, the Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) has pointed out the importance of conserving urban ecosystems.

As a first step in this direction, the KSBB is initiating such a project, the first phase of which will conduct a study on the ponds and other water bodies in the city with the help of residential associations, NGOs and city residents.

‘’Recognising the importance of biodiversity and healthy ecosystems for their survival, many cities today are undertaking initiatives to conserve their surroundings. These actions can reach far beyond the boundaries of the city, affecting biodiversity on a global scale. Urbanisation is happening at an alarming rate in Kerala and we also should recognise the importance of conserving urban ecosystems,’’ said KSBB chairman Oommen V Oommen.

KSBB member secretary K P Laladhas has requested residential associations, NGOs and city residents to provide details on ponds and other water bodies in their area. The details should include area of the water body, biodiversity status, quality of water, its utilisation, and other relevant information. The details should be sent to the KSBB, Pallimukku, Thiruvananthapuram - 695024 or over 0471-2740240 or 2741134 before September 3.
