KOCHI: The campaign undertaken by K R Rajagopal, the BJP candidate in Piravom, is a proof of his determination to put up a tough fight against both the fronts. In a telephonic chat with the City Express, Rajagopal talks about the party’s agenda and the ‘triangular fight that is in the offing at Piravom’. According to him, Piravom will surely see a triangular contest though none of the fronts have taken the fact at the face value. “Though the UDF and the LDF have an upper hand, the BJP will put up a tough fight,” he said. Rajagopal, who has been an active member of the party for the last 20 years, says the party has carried out an hectic campaign in Piravom for the last few days. “There is a good response from every quarters,” he says and adds that the BJP hoped to get more votes than it got in the last elections. So what are the issues the BJP focuses on? “Shortage of drinking water is the most important issue that was raised during the campaign. Besides, we have asked the people to look around at the pathetic condition of the hospitals and roads. The BJP is the only party that has talked about the real issues concerning people,” he says. Rajagopal adds that both the fronts have not talked about any important issues like corruption, farmers’ problem and the dangers of FDI in the retail sector. “Both the fronts have communalised politics. They are trying to split Christian votes,” he adds. The state committee member says that the BJP is focusing on ‘Gujarat model of development.’ “The major part of our campaign was about comprehensive development of the constituency which we feel the people have started to think about,” Rajagopal adds. “Our campaign has highlighted the influence of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in the ministry. The government is being led by the IUML which has even said that the fifth minister would be decided after the elections. This shows that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has no role in the governance,” he says and adds that this election will decide the fate of the Chandy government. When pointed out that the BJP campaign saw only a few state leaders, he says such reports and news were misleading. “State leaders like O Rajagopal, V Muraleedharan and C K Padmanabhan have campaigned for me,” he says. On the all-time controversy that BJP always sold votes, Rajagopal says: Such allegations are raised during every elections. We are against the Congress and the CPM. Such reports are mere allegations that are being propagated against the party,” says Rajagopal.
