The Piravom Boat Race for K Karunakaran Memorial Trophy will be held in Muvattupuzha on September 7, Minister for Civil Supplies Anoop Jacob told reporters here on Saturday.
Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the regatta.
Tourism Minister A P Anilkumar will flag off the race.
The minister said that Piravom boat race has assumed significance in Kerala history.
“This time, we have arranged more attractive items like helicopter stunt, water scooter racing, exhibition of canoes used for kayaking and the like,” he said.
“Helicopter stunt is aimed to promote helicopter tourism in rural areas.
Arrangements have been made for it on the AKM High School ground from where the helicopters will fly over Piravom river to Vembanad lake,” the minister said.
Renowned snakeboats like Karichal, Chambakulam, Jawahar Thayankar i , Anariputhan and Devadas Srivinayakan will take part in the regatta.
K Karunakaran Memorial Ever Rolling Trophy, T M Jacob Memorial Ever Rolling Trophy, Uma Devi Antharjanam (the first president of Piravom panchayat) Trophy, Piravom Pravasi Global Association Trophy and various other prizes await the winners.
Anoop Jacob will preside over the function.
Sports Minister K B Ganesh Kumar will distribute the awards.
Jose K Mani MP will deliver the key note address.
MLAs Benny Behanan, Joseph Vazhakkan and Mons Joseph, District panchayat president Eldose Kunnappilly, District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth and actor Lalu Alex will participate.
