BANGALORE: The Department of Public Instruction, under the Sarva Shiksha Abhigyan (SSA) scheme, has selected class VI students of 17 government schools in Bangalore Rural district to continue their schooling in English medium while five other schools will get virtual classrooms this year.
Announcing these initiatives at a meeting with Zilla Parishat members and Block Education Officers working in Bangalore Rural district to set agenda for 2011-12 here on Tuesday, Minister for Labour and Bangalore Rural District Incharge B N Bachche Gowda told media persons that Bangalore Rural has produced the best results under SSA in the entire country with a pass percentage of 88% in the academic year 2010-11. He congratulated the entire team for the hard work they have put in to bring the district from 22nd rank in 2009 to the first position on 2010-11 and said he would extend all assistance to the department to maintain the position.

Explaining his stand on the English medium, he said, "This is a pilot project and has been presented as an option to the students. Even so, nearly 600 students have opted for English medium in class VI and this demand is expected to only increase." He pointed out that those who speak publicly for making Kannada the compulsory medium of instruction give their children the best education with English as their medium of instruction depriving the students in government schools the same advantage. "Now, the case wouldn't be so," he observed.
