Mumbai: Filmmaker Anand Patwardhan’s decade-long battle with Prasar Bharati over his film ended in victory on Friday with the Supreme Court (SC) ordering that the documentary be shown on the network.

Patwardhan said he felt vindicated by the apex court verdict and hoped it would set a precedent for other films as well.

"It is a great feeling that the SC has ordered screening of my film Father, Son and the Holy War on Doordarshan (DD)," Patwardhan said.

"My film has won two national awards, it has been appreciated as one of the 50 best documentaries in the world and yet I was told by DD that it was likely to cause communal problems and law and order problems. I am glad my battle for my rights has been justified," Patwardhan said.

The SC on Friday directed Prasar Bharti to show Patwardhan’s documentary on DD within eight weeks.

The verdict was delivered by a Bench comprising Justice A R Lakshmanan and Justice L S Panta by dismissing an appeal filed by the public broadcaster against a Bombay High Court order asking it to telecast the film, saying the appeal was without merit.

“Although my film has a ‘A’ certificate, I am confident that my film will be screened inspite of the recent Bombay High Court order not to screen ‘A’ certificate movies," he added.
