BANGALORE: New Thippasandra is one of the popular shopping destinations in East Bangalore. Located near the 80 feet road in Indiranagar, this route also connects Indiranagar to areas like Bagmane Tech Park and BEML gate. This makes it an important thoroughfare for commuters and shoppers alike. The road however is woefully short on parking space. Allotted parking space fills up by 5 in the evening after which visitors resort to double parking and occupy an entire lane. Thus creating traffic snarls. A popular method used by car owners who double park is to keep their driver or one person in the car at all times so as to avoid being towed or fined. This road is also a one way with only few exits in the beginning which causes shoppers to avoid going ahead to find available parking as it would be a herculean task to come back in case they can’t find any. The situation worsens on Sundays as towing vehicles are generally off duty.“The situation has worsened for the past two months as the adjoining 4th Main road which leads back to 80 feet road has been blocked for BWSSB work,” said a constable at the police station concerned. “People try and park as near to the starting of the road as possible as they can take a nearer exit and avoid having to go all the way to BEML gate just to turn back again,” he added. This area obviously needs to figure out a parking solution and fast as presently on busy days, motorists are left with only one lane to drive in, which is also mostly filled by pedestrians as the footpaths are lined with stalls. Daily efforts by the sub-inspector and assistant sub-inspector of the traffic police station concerned to catch people flaunting the one way rule have also not had enough success. The inspector-in-charge of this stretch of road, MC Kavitha said that towing of vehicles is a regular practice on this road and violators are fined `100 and left with strict warnings. Hundred footpath vendors were recently cleared in order to free the walking space. However, the police resources having been diverted for Ganesha immersion these past few days the problem seems to have surfaced again. ‘‘I request the public to treat this matter seriously and avoid parking their vehicles in such haphazard manner, as it only leads to more chaos” she said. Residents living nearby however insisted that such parking in the area is a regular occurrence.
