CHENNAI: The Delhi-based National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) on Wednesday appealed to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to set up a state-level panel for conservancy staff.Speaking to reporters after a review meeting of government agencies and public sector undertakings (PSU) on facilities provided for conservancy workers and their working conditions here, K B Krishnamurthy, member of the Commission, said, “We have already apprised the Governor of the conditions of conservancy staff and plan to meet the Chief Minister, when we will ask her to set up such a commission to settle workers’ grievances.”On prevailing working conditions of conservancy staff in the city, Krishnamurthy said, “While moving along Korukupet, I saw a teenage boy working in neck-deep sewage removing clog. I immediately called the police and asked them to file a case against the persons concerned for putting the life of the teenage boy at risk.”“In many cases, conservancy worker’s deaths are not compensated. Police have not filed cases. I asked the police also to give me details of past 10 years of how many sewer deaths have taken place in the State, what are the cases they have filed, whether they have filed cases of unnatural deaths and how many have been convicted or acquitted,” he said.Krishnamurthy announced that the NCSK would investigate deaths throughout Tamil Nadu over the past 10 years and he will be meeting the DGP on the issue in November.
