Islamabad: At least 40 militants were killed on Wednesday in airstrikes by Pakistani military in the restive North Waziristan tribal region where it has launched a major offensive against the Taliban.
Five hideouts and ammunition dumps of the militants were also wiped out in the strikes carried out in Nawae Killi and Zaram Asar in the north of Datta Khel area of the troubled region, military said.
It said that "40 terrorists including foreigners were killed" in the precise aerial strikes. The identities of the foreign militants, however, were not disclosed.
The military in June launched the Operation 'Zarb-i-Azb' against the Taliban in North Waziristan bordering Afghanistan to flush out the militant group's strongholds.
The operation was launched following a deadly attack on Karachi international airport which killed 37 people. Three months into the operation, the military said it has cleared more than 80 per cent of the territory in North Waziristan including its regional headquarters of Miramshah and killed at least 1,000 militants so far.
It was the second day of air assaults after 31 militants and three soldiers were killed yesterday in two separate incidents in the country's troubled North Waziristan and Khyber tribal districts.
