New Delhi: The Academy Awards 2014 ceremony is scheduled to take place in the first week of March, next year. Though it's a bit early but there have been films which have showcased the calibre of fighting it to the last point. We have compiled a list of seven such films which can turn out to be the winners at Oscars 2014 in different categories.
Gravity: This is a film everyone is talking about. From acclaimed Hollywood directors to renowned film critics, everyone is praising the film for its 'out of the box' content. Some went on to say that 'Gravity' is the finest sci-fi film ever made in Hollwyood, even better than Stanley Kubrick's '2001 - A Space Odyssey'. Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, the film features George Clooney and Sandra Bullock in the lead roles, and is about a group of astronauts who are trapped inside a spaceship.
12 Years A Slave: This film is a British-American collaboration co-produced by Hollywood heavyweight Brad Pitt. Having a big name on a film's side is a huge advantage as it comes handy during the campaign and build up to the Oscars. Director Steve McQueen's film is a period drama that revolves around a slave. It boasts of actors like Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and is hailed for its portrayal of the bygone era.
Captain Phillips: You can always expect good things from a filmmaker like Paul Greengrass. The director is known for his edge-of-the-seat thrillers and distinct take on contemporary American foreign policies. The man behind the success of the Jason Bourne series is once again in the news for 'Captain Phillips'. He has got the support of an actor like Tom Hanks this time, who has played the character of a ship captain, who has to rescue his crew from the clutches of Somali pirates.
Blue Jasmine: There is a reason critics compared 'Blue Jasmine' with a classic like 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. The collaboration of a witty director like Woody Allen and a nuanced actress like Cate Blanchett has produced a roller-coaster ride of emotions that are subtle, classy and penetrating. The film is about an upmarket American socialite who becomes poor due to sudden turn of events. One of Allen's favourite actors Alec Baldwin is also in the film.
Prisoners: It's a recently released film but with the kind of support it is generating, it is likely to emerge as a strong contender for the Oscars by the end of this year. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film stars Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis in pivotal roles. The film is about a couple who are helped by a detective in the search of their missing daughters. The story may look simple on the outset but it probes deep into the values attached to subjects like religion, love and compassion.
Apart from these five films, there are two films which can turn out to be forerunners at the Academy Awards of 2014.
American Hustle: This film is scheduled to be released on December 13, 2013 but the kind of star-cast it has, it may emerge as the winner in several categories. The director of 'Silver Linings Playbook' David Russell is back with his favourite actor Bradley Cooper. However, Cooper is not alone as he is going to be supported by Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence, who do you think is lesser than other among these actors. It's about a con-artist who is going to be confronted by FBI's best agent.
August - Osage County: Unlike the Hindi film industry, Hollywood superstars never shy away from working with each other. Meryl Streep has joined hands with Julia Roberts in this relationship drama which is directed by John Wells. The story is based on the play of the same name by Tracy Letts. 'August - Osage County' will hit the theatres on December 25, 2013.####
