‘Road Trip’, the very word evokes a craving for adventure, a want….no…a need to escape from the city…. And a strong urge to hop on a bike or into a car and set out along the vast roads, to serenity and beyond! A road trip is the ultimate food for the senses. Feeling the wind caressing your skin, the glimpses of the spectacular landscape, a breath of fresh air and the taste of pure freedom. What is road tripping today? A means of vacationing wouldn’t be the right way to put it.. .a fast growing hobby? Definitely. Chances are, you’ve taken at least one road trip - maybe with your family, your college friends, or even by yourself. For almost everyone, it has, not just personal connotations but personal memories attached too. Ask any guy what his plans are on a long weekend, and the obvious answer will be “I’m taking a trip with a couple of friends.”Now young Kochiites too are taking to the roads at a moment’s notice, to seek solace in the, oh-so-many beautiful regions in and around God’s own country. Kiran Joseph, a BCom student of Sacred Heart College says that he and a group of his friends go on such trips regularly. He says there is no pre planning of any kind. “Either one of us just wakes up one morning and says why don’t we take a trip, and even before the destination is chosen we’re already on the road.” These boys have been on almost 15 trips in the last one year. “Things that we do without a plan always turn out to be the best decisions,” he says. “There will always be places that remain undiscovered, those are the kind of places that we like to go to and explore,” says John Kurian. And what would a perfect trip be without those perfectly enchanting locations! A few favorites are Vagamon, Valpara, Kuruva Dweep in Wayanad, Mararikkulam, Illithod, Erattumukham, Elavizhapoonchira Mudhumala, Varkala, Athirampilly and so on.But then why take the trouble of driving long distance when you can catch a train or a bus? In fact why take all this trouble anyway ? Ask any loyal ‘road tripper’ and they’ll tell you that, a road trip, though it may require more effort, promises more freedom, freedom in terms of your mind and senses as you glide on through those endless meandering roads….. or for some others, the freedom to break away from the monotony of the clock-work lives that we lead today. The adrenaline rush of drifting over the roads and curving around sharp hair pin bends while the wind rushes through your hair is second to none. But the unanimous opinion is that the natural and scenic beauty is worth all the risky rides, the long journey, and the considerable usage of petrol. The boys also pointed out that a road trip can really bring out the depth of friendship. Rameez a BBM student of Chinmaya Vidyapeet says that “In those rather risky situations you always know that you have friends to make sure you don’t try to overdo anything and they’re always there to watch over you, it’s a bonding experience.”Whether you’re looking for a wild adventure or a thrill seeking ride, a search for nature or even just an escape from everyday life, a road trip is the latest “thing-to-do” ! So what are you waiting for then? Rev up those engines and take off, you never know who you might meet or where you might end up, but I guarantee you, it will be worth the ride.
