CHENNAI: The sight of a dazed, blonde foreigner walking around with bloody gashes on her hands is not something that people in downtown Maduravoyal are used to. So, when this woman who looked about 25, kept walking aimlessly and snarled at anyone who made enquiries, they assumed that she was mentally disturbed and called for help. After a team from NGO Udhavum Karangal reached her on Tuesday afternoon, they found that she was violent and showed signs of schizophrenia. “When we asked her what her name was, she reluctantly said that it was Katherina,” said a volunteer who effected the rescue. She also said that she was from Norway, but refused to say any more.Keeping her condition in mind, she was subdued and taken for psychiatric help on Tuesday evening. It was then that they noticed that her arms were marred with deep slashes, “We believe that these are self-inflicted and must have been very painful as the blood was barely dry, when we took her in,” she added. When the NGO’s founder Vidyaakar attempted to get some details from her, she is believed to have been furtive and violent, replying with disjointed replies, “She gave us four digits of her boyfriend’s telephone number and when we asked for the rest, she yelled at us for having interest in him,” said the volunteer. While she is fluent in English, she had no possessions on her and no one from the Maduravoyal area had come forward to recognize her. She was sedated and is at the NGO’s home for women.When contacted, city police confirmed that no missing persons report for a foreigner had been registered yet. Immigration sources said that no request had been made yet to trace the woman, but added that it would not be very difficult, as the traffic from Scandinavian countries was slim.
