CHENNAI/COIMBATORE: There is no need to fear nuclear power or the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) as the government has taken enough safety measures, said R Chidambaram, principal scientific advisor to the Centre. On the sidelines of a programme at SRM University, he told reporters that it was essential to strengthen neighbourhood awareness programmes towards nuclear power services, when a government begins generating electricity from nuclear reactors.Once the plant begins to function, then there is a chance that the cost of electricity could be brought down. Remembering the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, Chidambaram added all safety measures are being implemented, so that even natural calamities like a tsunami cannot shut the systems down. The government is also in the process of opening another plant, an Advanced Ultra Super Critical thermal plant along with Bharath Heavy Electrical Ltd (BHEL), before 2020.‘N-Plant Emits Lesser Radiation Than a Hosp’The radiation from a nuclear reactor is lesser than the amount of radiation emitted from hospital equipment like CT scan, x-ray or angiogram, claimed B Venkataraman, associate director of Radiological Safety and Environmental Group, Indira Gandhi Centre for AtomicResearch, Kalpakkam.
