KOCHI: The commercialisation of educational sector is coming in the way of nurturing Kerala as an educational hub of the country, K V Thomas, Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs has said. He was inaugurating the National Institute of Technology, Calicut, Alumni Association’s (NITCAA) Meet 2011 on Saturday."It is true that running educational institutions have become a costly affair now. But we must be accountable to society,” KV Thomas said. Now educational institutions have become centres of trade and commerce, he added.NITCAA Meet 2011 was a reunion of the alumni of NIT Calicut (formerly, Calicut Engineering College). There are 23 NITCAA chapters including those in the US and the UK. At the meeting, NITCAA Cochin announced the institution of Prof K M Bahavuddin Award (Rs 1 lakh) for the best engineering teacher in memory of the late K M Bahavuddin, former principal of NIT Kozhikode; and Prof P M Jussay Gold Medal for the best outgoing student from NIT Kozhikode in honour of the late Prof Jussay, a former teacher.VM Fasal Ali presided over the inaugural function. Dominic Presentation MLA, Hibi Eden MLA and Prof Sandeep Sancheti, Director of NIT, Kozhikode, spoke.
