'Never Seen This Side of UP Police': Jalaun Cops Arrange Wedding of Daughter of Man Killed in Encounter

Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police played good samaritan when a team of cops organised the wedding of a young woman whose father they killed in an encounter. Not only did they arrange for the venue, food, and delicacies, but they also bore the expenses of the household goods, jewellery, and motorcycle, given as a gift to the bride and welcomed the Baratis in a big way. The bride’s mother said that she had never thought in her dreams of marrying off her daughter in such a grand way and that she would remain indebted to UP Police for being a saviour for the family.

Almost a year ago, constable Bhedjit Singh, who was posted under Kotwali Police area in UP’s Orai district, was brutally murdered on May 10, 2023. However, within four days of the incident, Jalaun Police neutralised the two main accused–Ramesh Raikwar and Kallu Ahirwar–in an encounter in neighbouring Jalaun district.

But that was not the end of the story. “The family members of slain criminal Ramesh Raikwar were living in an utterly pitiable state and this moved us all. They hardly had anything at home, there were two daughters to marry off, and no working hand. It was then that we assured the family of all possible help. Also, we promised the slain criminal’s wife to bear all expenses of the marriage of the two daughters,” said Girija Shankar Tripathi, circle officer (CO), who was part of the encounter team of Jalaun police.

Recently, Ramesh’s widow Tara met Tripathi and informed him that her daughter Shivani’s marriage had been fixed in Jhansi district and it was then that Jalaun police started planning the wedding. “We, thereafter, planned the wedding. We pooled in money, also took help from the general public, booked a venue, arranged for the household gifts including a bike, and other goods, made arrangements for the food, refreshments, and jewellery too,” the CO said.

On March 2, Orai’s Janki Palace witnessed this one-of-its-kind wedding, where cops from the neighbouring district (Jalaun) not only greeted the Baratis but also showered their blessings on the newlywed couple. “I haven’t seen this side of UP police. When I lost my husband, who was killed in an encounter with Jalaun police, I too thought of ending my life as we were living in extreme poverty and there were two daughters to marry off. It was like meeting a dead end. But, thanks to Jalaun police, who stood by us and helped us throughout. Cops not only extended monetary help to the family but also assured all possible help in organising my daughters’ wedding. And today, they fulfilled their promise,” said Tara Raikwar, wife of Ramesh Raikwar.

Bride Shivani Raikwar said her father’s absence was not felt at the wedding. She said she was thankful to UP police for giving her such memorable moments of her life. “I never thought that I would also be having such beautiful memories to cherish throughout my life,” she said.

Aseem Chaudhary, additional superintendent of police (ASP), Jalaun, reiterated that on May 14, 2023, two dreaded criminals, accused of the murder of a police constable, were killed in an encounter by the Jalaun police. “The family members of one of the criminals, Ramesh, then met Jalaun police and said Ramesh got the punishment for his deeds but now who will marry off the two daughters? Seeing the pitiable state of the family, Jalaun police assured all possible help to the family and also gave word to make arrangements for the daughter’s wedding,” he said.
