Unrest along the Indo-Nepal border continues as Madhesi protesters blocked a crucial bridge near Rexaul in Bihar. Nepal Police had to allegedly resort to lathicharge to disperse the protestors.
The police also allegedly used batons on protesters blocking crucial bridge at Indo-Nepal border.
Nepal Police has claimed that the Madhesi protestors are not allowing the supplies to enter from the Indian side. The agitators are demanding a change in the Constitution.
Southern plains of the landlocked Nepal has been simmering with tension since the new Constitution was formally adopted on September 20. Madhesi parties - who claim to represent the interests of the Indian-origin inhabitants of Nepal's Terai region - and Tharu ethnic groups have been agitating against the charter. They see it as flawed and discriminatory to their interests.
The protests have overwhelmed India-Nepal ties, as transit of goods and fuel to the Himalayan nation via the major trading points of Birgunj and Biratnagar have been squeezed.
Faced with an acute shortage of fuel and essential goods, the new Nepalese government has been cosying up to its northern neighbour China.
