Kathmandu: Nepal government today said it has released 467 jailed Maoists and the rest will be freed shortly.
With this decision they met a key demand of Maoists, and the Cabinet approved a three-member team announced earlier to initiate talks with the guerrillas to forge lasting peace in the country.
The Government's team for the negotiation would be headed by Home Minister Krishna Sitoula, it was announced in Parliament today after the Cabinet's approval.
Besides Sitoula, the members of the team are Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Pradip Gyawali, and Minister of State for Labour and Transport, Ramesh Lekhak.
The first meeting of the Government's team today decided to create a conducive environment for talks with the Maoists by releasing all the detainees.
The Government will free all remaining Maoists after clearing charges against them through legal procedures shortly.
