Earlier, based on a complaint by the Forest Department, the Padagiri police in Palakkad had registered six cases against the Cherunelli estate, Mira Floors, Smitha Mount, Alexandriya, Karappara and Laxmi estates for pledging forest lands and availing loans against it.However, the Cherunelli estate and some others were reported to have repaid their loans. But since they were not entitled to raise loans on leased properties, cases were charged on the lessees. These estates availed loans worth Rs 14 crore. The cases were transferred to the CI of Nemmara and DySP of Alathur.“We have submitted all the files to the Crime Branch,” said Alathur DySP Shankaranarayanan .“All the copies of our documents relating to the pledging of forest land were submitted to the Padagiri police,” said Chief Conservator of Forests N K Shashidharan, who had reported the matter to the Director General of Police earlier.The Forest Department had, in its report to the police, pointed out that the Cherunelli estate took a loan of Rs 29 lakh from SBI, Mira Floors Rs 9.98 crore from KSIDC, Smitha Mount Rs 67.78 lakh from SouthIndian Bank, Alexandria Rs 47.66 lakh from Catholic Syrian Bank, Karappara Rs 3.34 lakh from SBI while Laxmi availed Rs 5 lakh from SBT.Banks have begun attaching the properties after the estates failed to repay the loan.first published:January 01, 1970, 05:30 ISTlast updated:January 01, 1970, 05:30 IST
