THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘Idli’ made of amaranthus, ‘dosa’ made of  ‘muringa’ leaves, ‘appam’ made of  ‘chembila’ - students of Kalady Government Higher Secondary School had not heard of them till Monday, when the school hosted  the ‘Nattarivu’ Day. Natural food recipes, significance of many herbs found in our backyards, the real secret behind many of our customs and festivals- all these were introduced to students through posters displayed in the school.  At the assembly held on the day, students and teachers were given a brief idea on what the day was all about. Then talks were held on ‘land and its culture’, ‘the cuisines indigenous to our land’, ‘festivals, customs of our land’ and so on. A display of books related to ‘nattarivu’ was also put up.  ‘’Once they learned about the recipes and its health secrets, they were excited to try them. So, we are planning to host a programme in September, where these recipes would be prepared and put up for exhibition in the school,’’ said Swaminathan, a teacher in the school.  The traditional knowledge that is getting lost in the flood of modern technology was provided to the students, which proved a fruitful exercise. Some students have even come forward to compile such traditional snippets and bring them out for their friends in other schools. It was under the aegis of the Nature Club in the school, Vidyarangam Kalasahityavedi and SS club that the programme was initiated in the school.  The students were asked to trace out the local history of the area where the school is situated, in the days to come. They were given speeches about the significance of Balaramapuram handloom, Aranmula mirror, Ambalapuzha ‘payasam’, Kozhikode halwa and such items indigenous to a land. The programme was inaugurated by school headmistress S Seethalakshmi. Senior assistant Valsalakumari and Nature Club convener Girija Devi were also present.
