KOCHI: The District Veterinary Hospital is planning to conduct an exhibition and national seminar on different varieties of pets shortly. The programme is being conducted as part of the centenary celebrations of the hospital which was set up in 1911 when it commenced as a nursing home for the elephants and horses of the erstwhile kings.The officials of the hospital are planning to encourage farmers and breeders to bring in their different breeds of animals. A senior officer with the hospital said that usually city folks are not aware of the different varieties of animal breeds. This will help create awareness and be of interest to all.Vaccination campaigns will be held to lay stress on the importance of vaccinating farm animals and pets. Farmers will also be encouraged to bring in mixed breeds of goats, cows, pigs, rabbits, fowls etc and explain their specialities. Special quiz competitions will be held for the farmers in order to test their knowledge on the animals.Free sterilisation camps will be held for dogs and cats too. Awards will be given to the best dairy farming, best goat farming, best rabbit farming, best pig farming and best poultry. The best fodder will also be selected.Director of the Animal Husbandry department Dr R Vijayakumar said, “There are so many diseases existing in animals that people are not aware of and such programmes can help create awareness on them.”The hospital is conducting mobile camp dispensaries, infertility camps, free vaccine distribution, treatment for communicable diseases and other emergency treatments.A similar programme will be conducted in Thiruvananthapuram from September 1 to 8.Awareness camps for technicians and farmers will be conducted as part of the programme. Also the best veterinary doctor will be selected.
