Mysore royal dynasty gets new heir, queen adopts grand nephew of late husband
The new King has been rechristened as Yaduveera Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodiyar.

Mysore: The Mysore royal dynasty has got a heir. The Queen of Mysore Pramoda Devi Wodiyar has formally adopted her late husband Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar's grand nephew Yaduveera Gopalaraje Urs at a ceremony held at the main Amba Vilas Palace in Mysore on Tuesday.

The new King has been rechristened as Yaduveera Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodiyar. The 22 year old new heir is currently studying at Boston in the USA.

The adoption function was attended by most of the royal family members, Vedic scholars, high ranking government officials, Karnataka Home minister KJ George, Housing minister MH Ambareesh and others.

Srikantadatta Wodiyar died childless in December 2013. The Mysore royal family which ruled the southern parts of present day Karnataka for over 550 years is considered the longest reigning monarchy in India.

The royal family owns assets worth over Rs.10, 000 crores in today's market value. It presides over the annual Dasara functions at Mysore. The family is still respected across Old Mysore region for its rulers' pro-people work over centuries.
