Condemning the violence in Muzaffarnagar, Muslim clerics on Sunday cautioned the people against "political conspiracies" aimed at dividing them on religious lines and appealed for peace and harmony in Uttar Pradesh.

"The Muzaffarnagar violence in condemnable.... For past few days, there were attempts to create tension in western UP.... The violence there is result of political game, which should be exposed," member, All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahli told PTI.

"Strict action should be ensured ... mere saying that some political parties are involved in it will not serve the purpose...," Mahali said, appealing to people to ensure that peace is restored.

All India Shia Personal Board spokesman Mulana Yasoob Abbas alleged that some "forces" were trying to create divide among religious groups for political gains.

"Some forces are trying to create a divide...they should be taken care of...," Abbas said, asking people to remain calm and alert against such propaganda and ensure peace.

Army on Sunday staged a flag march in riot-hit areas of Muzaffarnagar district where the toll in clashes between members of two communities rose to 12 even as 30 persons have been arrested for the violence.
