The Maharashtra government has announced compensation of Rs 1 lakh to each of the families of the victims of the Malvani hooch tragedy in Mumbai. Meanwhile, the death toll in the tragedy has climbed to 98 while 48 others are undergoing treatment in hospital.
The Mumbai police have started a crackdown on illegal liquor dens in the city and arrested 35 people following multiple raids.
At least six people have been arrested on charges of selling the contaminated liquor in Malvani, and sent to police custody till June 26. As many as eight police officers and four excise department officials have also been suspended on charges of negligence and connivance.
Ordering a probe into the tragedy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asked Mumbai police to submit a report as soon as possible. The case has been transferred to the Mumbai crime branch.
On Wednesday, the victims consumed liquor at a shop in Malvani and fell sick the next morning. It was evident by Thursday evening that they had consumed contaminated liquor.
