Lucknow: With an eye on next year's Assembly elections in the state, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday announced that the allowance hike for unemployment youth will be raised in the state if he is voted back to power.
The allowance will be raised to Rs 1, 000 from the existing Rs 500 per month, he said.
Yadav, who gave out cheques to hundreds of people at a rally in Lucknow on Friday, accused the Congress-led UPA Centre government of refusing to support the state government's scheme for helping unemployed graduates and post-graduates.
Yadav said he had written two letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but it was of no use.
"We will increase the unemployment allowance to Rs 1,000 per month if voted back to power in next elections and with resources permitting."
"The Centre's attitude is really disappointing," he said. However, his government had fulfilled its promise made in its manifesto.
A total of 57,000 cheques of Rs 1,000 each were distributed at the rally, said Information Director Nitin Ramesh Gokarn.
The state government had implemented the scheme from this fiscal to give Rs 500 per month to the unemployed graduates of the state. The cheques to be distributed tomorrow will carry the Rs 1, 000 allowance for two months- April and May.
"Political forces have united against me in the state while they are in process of uniting at the Centre," he claimed adding that "a conspiracy is being hatched against me by the Centre."
However, he said that no discrimination had been made in implementing the scheme on the grounds of sex, caste or religion.
"When we can give unemployment allowance why can’t others," he said adding that his party would force other state governments to follow the example set up the Uttar Pradesh government
