New Delhi: India's involvement in United Nations peacekeeping operations which began in 1950 seems to be getting deeper.

On Monday it was announced that the 9 Recce and Observation Flight of the Army Aviation Corps are to be deployed in Congo as part of the UN Peace Keeping Force.

Eastern Command GOC-in-C Lt Gen K S Jamwal, while addressing the troops said that the Corps had contributed significantly over the past 18 months to the UN Congo Mission.

He added that the Flight inducted in Congo earlier had earned the professional respect and admiration of the international peace keeping community.

"9 Recce and Observation Flight have an excellent operational record. The Flight has a proud and outstanding record during operations, having contributed most significantly in the war effort in 1971,” news agency PTI quoted Jamwal as saying.

"The UN tenure is yet another feather in their cap and all ranks of the Flight look forward eagerly to this challenge," he added.

India's involvement in UN peacekeeping operations began when a brigade was deployed to enforce an armistice on the Korean peninsula.

Ever since then, India has contributed 85,000 soldiers for 43 missions worldwide, but the current deployment is the largest at any given time.

India is the third largest contributor to UN peacekeeping missions after Bangladesh and Pakistan.
