THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the era of smart phones, the final year students of Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering here have a found a new use for it - to effectively prevent car-jacking. By incorporating technology, car owners are enabled with an enhanced security feature on their mobile phones by which they can lock down and even cut the ignition when an intruder tries to take away their car. “The core concept is placing an equipment inside the car which is attached to a mobile. If anyone tries to take the car without the information of the owner, then a call is made to the owner’s mobile phone. As soon as the owner calls back, the car is locked for ignition and can only be operated by the owner,” said Kiran, final year student of Electronics and Communication Engineering. The highlight of this project is that distance is of no problem; it would work even if the owner is out of town. “Car-jacking has been an issue of prime concern in the past few years and this is a simple and easy solution to it,” he added. The project was done by Kiran, Chandini, Greeshma and Abhinav under the guidance of assistant professor Sheeja M K and lecturer Bindu V. The students claim that the commercial cost of this project will only be be Rs 2,000 and that this innovative equipment can guarantee 100-per cent prevention against car theft.
