Bowing down to sharp criticism, both House and Petition Committees of the state Legislature decided to cancel the proposed 15-day study tour of MLAs to European and Middle East countries.
The Committees met here on Thursday and took the decision. The decision to cancel the foreign trip was taken in view of the severe drought in 142 taluks in the state.
The 11-member committee along with three officials of state Legislature were to go on a study tour to Russia, Egypt, Israel and a few Scandinavian countries on September 27.
The tour would have cost the state exchequer about Rs 1 crore. The decision was taken by the Legislature Committee following an appeal by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar in Bijapur on Wednesday.
The MLAs’ tour had also invited the wrath of various leaders, including KPCC president Dr G Parameshwar, JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy and former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa
