TIRUVARUR: DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Sunday strongly criticised the AIADMK government for its decision to shift the Secretariat back to Fort St George. Addressing a public meeting here, the former chief minister said a new Secretariat was constructed since the old one built by the British was a symbol of slavery. The AIADMK government had also abandoned the housing scheme, which would help poor people have a house of their own, he claimed.Taking a dig at Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, he said, “abandoning has become your habit”.Reading from the Governor’s address, he said the address says, “the present government too would continue to work for the poor.”“You should understand what is the meaning of ‘the present government too’. It openly admits that the previous DMK government worked for the poor. I take this as a compliment for the DMK government,” he remarked in a sarcastic vein.A defeat for the DMK in the Assembly elections does not mean a defeat for Dravidian sentiments and ideals, he said, and added, it would be an opportunity to sharpen the party’s ideals. Before the recent Assembly elections, the media and people spoke about a change. The word ‘change’ is eternal. Hence, change would be repeated after some time, he asserted.
