KOCHI: There’s been an increasing feeling among the younger generation of music lovers that Malayalam film music hasn’t reinvented itself enough to accommodate new styles and expressions. The single-minded focus on melody has led to many music composers often not thinking beyond the regular. This means that most songs are set in a similar vein, with a distinct lack of peppy, foot-tapping dance numbers. In several popular Malayalam music reality shows, one sees contestants picking up Tamil item songs to add verve and pace to their performances.  It is with this idea in mind that D J Savyo, rather well-known among youngsters in the city, has come out with a CD, brought out by Sa Re Ga Ma of old Malayalam song remixes. The nine songs include old hits like Kuttanadan Punjayile, Pavada Venam, Oru Madurakinavin, Kuyilene Thedi and Ne Madhu Pakaru. Savyo says that there was a constant demand for peppy, dance numbers at private parties at Dubai and Kerala among the Malayali crowds, which made him give the CD a serious thought. “It was at the back of my mind. But old Malayalam melodies are considered sacrosanct and ‘tampering’ with them can be frowned upon. Remixing is of course very regular in the South and Bollywood, and it is after all an individual choice and interpretation,” he says. Savyo’s remixed version has retained the melody of the songs, while giving them what he calls a ‘mash up’ with dance beats and electronic music, so as to make the songs quite ideal for those wanting to shake a leg. The songs are also a trip down memory lane for most. As for the choice of songs, he says he took numbers which he has seen his parents and in-laws crooning often. Savyo has been publicising his CD through Facebook and other social networking sites and is happy with the response that is flowing in. “I think the younger lot of composers would like to experiment more with film and other music. Right now, it is a bit old school, with only melody being the criteria.” He adds that it could be something to do with music given much more prominence in Tamil and Hindi, which makes them come up with a range of songs, something that is missing in Malayalam. The  CD has been launched at music stores across the state and the DJ is awaiting the verdict.
