THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Despite all the controversies surrounding the professional education sector, there will be an increase of 400 seats in the medical colleges in the state with 200 seats each being added to government and self-financing medical colleges.
The increase in the number of seats will be in Sree Uthradom Thirunal Academy of Medical Sciences (SUT), Thiruvananthapuram, and Sri Gokulam Medical College, Venjarammoodu in Thiruvananthapuram district. Last year, SUT Medical College could not make admissions as they did not have the approval of the Medical Council of India (MCI). This year, MCI has given sanction for 100 seats in this college. The MCI has also decided to increase the number of seats in Sri Gokulam Medical College, from 50 to 150 seats this year. This meant an increase of 200 seats in the selffinancing sector. As per the latest list of medical colleges and courses approved by the MCI for 2011-12 published on the website there are 23 medical colleges in the state.
