MEA officials asked not to speak to media till Lalit Modi row gets over: sources

New Delhi: Treading carefully on former Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi's controversy involving External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, the Narendra Modi government issued a gag order to the officials at the ministry, said sources on Friday.

The sources said joint secretaries have been asked not to speak to the media till the controversy gets over. The sources added that a verbal directive has been given to all joint secretaries.

With the Congress-led opposition in no mood to relent over the controversy, the NDA government is now in damage control mode and making attempts to be seen acting tough on Lalit Modi.

According to sources, the government has put all investigations against Lalit Modi on the fast track.

In a significant development, the Blue Corner notice against Lalit Modi is likely to be converted into a Red Corner notice if he doesn’t comply with the authorities. If the Red Corner notice comes in place, the ex-IPL chief can be detained in any country and handed over to India.

Sources further said that the notices would be served to Lalit Modi in the next two weeks.

Earlier, CNN-IBN had learnt that the government was keen on resolving the controversy before the onset of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
