Gwalior: A man from Gwalior was convicted in a murder case in 2000 and on the run for 11 years nearly got away by passing himself off as a victim of the Kedarnath flash floods in 2013.
However, a tiff with an old creditor ruined his plans.
The convict, Bhagwan Das Kushwah, was earlier employed as a police clerk.
Bhagwan moved the High Court against his conviction and was granted bail. He then jumped bail and was on the run as police kept looking for him in subsequent years.
Bhagwan along with his sons Dashrath and Narendra then hatched a plan to pass him off among those who disappeared during 2013 Kedarnath tragedy. His sons took signatures of neighbours that their father had gone to seek blessings when the tragedy struck the hilly state and submitted a panchnama in the court.
His family used to furnish the panchnama whenever police came looking for Kushwah.
However, this plan unravelled when Bhagwan was spotted by a creditor, Brijmohan Kushwah, who had earlier given an Rs 70,000 loan to him.
After spotting him, Brijmohan started demanding his money back from Kushwah family. But Bhagwan’s family, instead of paying him, beat him up.
An upset Brijmohan then lodged a police complaint and also intimated crime branch about spotting Bhagwan alive. Crime branch soon arrested Bhagwan and his two sons.
ASP (Crime) Alok Singh said that police were verifying whether Bhagwan’s sons received any financial help from government, taking advantage of their father’s ‘disappearance’ in 2013. “We have also intimated the court about Kushwah’s recovery,” Singh said.
