Kolkata: An aged man on Friday threatened to commit suicide in the court room of Chief Justice of Kolkata High Court Manjula Chellur after alleging that his property had been taken away by a land broker even as his petition on the issue remained pending before the Calcutta High Court.

Septuagenarian Shankar Majhi, who appeared to be upset, entered the court room of Chief Justice Chellur and Justice Joymalyo Bagchi at around 3.00 pm and told the court that his small piece of land at Parnashree in the south-western outskirts of the city had been grabbed by a promoter.

He claimed that he had appointed a legal representative to file and move a case before the High Court against the alleged illegal action of the promoter.

Majhi claimed that his case had not been heard and that he would commit suicide as he had no other asset to fall back on. The aged man then brought out a bottle from his pocket containing some liquid and threatened to consume it.

The Chief Justice and some lawyers present in the court room pacified him as policemen escorted him out. Justice Chellur asked the police to treat him with utmost care and take him to the Registrar General of the court.

She directed the Registrar General to hear his grievance and submit a report. Action, as necessary, would be taken following the submission of the report, the chief justice said.
