DINDIGUL: In yet another case of police encounter, a Keralite was shot dead by Madurai city police in Dindigul on Monday.It is said that a gang kidnapped Kathiravan, a DMK functionary and a native of Ramanathapuram district, demanding a ransom of `2 crore. The gang robbed all belongings of Kathiravan and threw him out near Madurai airport before leaving for Chennai by a flight, police sources said.Silaiman police had registered a case based on a complaint lodged by Kathiravan on February 12.Acting on a tip-off, that a gang of five was residing at ‘Suganya Lodge’ near Dindigul bus stand, the special team tried to question the inmates of the two rooms on Monday evening. As the gang members attempted to strangle inspector, Jayachandran shot one of them and overpowered three others.The man, identified as Sinoji (30) of Kerala, who sustained bullet injury died on the way to hospital.The other gang members were identified as Varichiyur Selvam of TN , a notorious rowdy, Varghese, Biju and Anish (all natives of Kerala).One gang member escaped from the police net.“Inspector Jayachandran shot Sinoji only on his hand and that was for self-defence.Only postmortem will reveal the real cause of death,” said Rajesh Das, IG (South Zone) told Express. Earlier, Silaiman police registered a case following a complaint from Kathiravan. Meanwhile Kathiravan also filed a complaint against J K Ritheesh Kumar, Ramanathapuram MP suspecting his involvement in the kidnapping case, to Rajesh Das.
