Ghaziabad/Lucknow: Asutosh Asthana, the main accused in a multi-crore provident fund (PF) scam allegedly involving judges, was found dead in his prison cell in Ghaziabad on Saturday morning
Asthana, 43, had been custody in the Dasna Jail since January. He was found unconscious in his cell at around 1400 hrs IST, Jail Superintendent V K Singh told PTI.
"He was sweating and was taken to the district hospital where doctors declared him brought dead," said Singh. An autopsy would establish how Asthana died.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating allegations that the PF savings of junior court employees in Ghaziabad district were withdrawn through fraud. An amount of Rs 23 crore was withdrawn and the money allegedly went to judges.
Asthana, a treasury officer, allegedly misused his position to withdraw the PF savings for himself and judges.
