Patna: The Bihar Vigilance Bureau on Friday arrested Madhepura District Magistrate Hemchandra Jha with Rs 1.9 lakh cash he had allegedly received as bribe, Director General of Police A R Sinha said.
Jha was taken into custody on Friday evening in Malsalami area of the Old City when he was on way from Madhepura to his Patna residence located in Rajiv Nagar under Pataliputra police station.
Jha's vehicle was intercepted by vigilance sleuths who were informed by a businessman, whose name was not disclosed, about the bribe, Sinha said.
As soon as the vehicle reached Malsalami, a vigilance team intercepted it and carried out a search leading to recovery of the money.
Jha is being interrogated at his residence, which too is being searched. Vigilance department sources said the search, might continue for the whole night.
The IAS officer is likely to be produced before the special vigilance judge on Saturday.
Earlier on Friday, the vigilance bureau arrested Assistant Labour Commissioner of West Champaran district and officer in-charge of Atri police station in Gaya District while allegedly accepting bribe.
