TRIPUNITHURA: As the series of Kathakali nights entered the fourth day on Saturday, the  connoisseurs got a rare chance to enjoy the staging of ‘Kamsa Vadham’ in ‘Kaplingadan’ style(southern style of Kathakali), where ‘Rasaabhinaya’ dominates throughout the play.  Madavoor Vasudevan Nair’s Thiranokku’ (ceremonial entry) itself showcased the beauty of the ‘Thekkan Kathi’ (portrayal of villain in southern school of Kathakali) The disciple of the late Chengannur Raman Pillai, Madavoor immortalised ‘Kamsa’ by keeping the classic elements of ‘Kaplingadan’ style.  Since the staging of ‘Kamsa Vadham’ at ‘Vrischikolsavam’ was after a long gap of nearly three decades, the Oottupura Malika was crowded with Kathakali fans. With his inimitable supremacy in handling villain characters, Madavoor portrayed ‘Kamsa’ by absorbing even the subtle elements of the character. The portrayal of non conventional Kathakali characters like wrestlers and mahouts added a unique flavour to the entire play.   Even while portraying the workings of the cruel mind of ‘Kamsa’, Madavoor  was keen to bring out the subtle nuances of the sub-conscious mind of ‘Kamsa’ who believes the tricky advice of celestial sage,  ‘Narada’.  The performance of Madavoor was ably supported by Kalamandalam Raman Namboothiri on ‘chenda’. Singer Kalamandalam Surendran while rendering the ‘padhams’, maintained the rustic nuances of traditional ‘Sopana Ragas’ like ‘Paadi’ which was used in the ‘charanas’ to express the unbeatable nature of Kamsa.   ‘Valiya Vilakku’  Tomorrow ‘Valiya Vilakku’, the most auspicious  procession of Vrischikolsavam, will be held on Tuesday night. The procession which will begin at 6.30 pm will feature tuskers Nanu Ezhuthachan Sreenivasan, Pampadi Rajan, Thiruvambadi Chandrasekharan.‘Pallivetta’, will be held in the wee hours of Wednesday.  After ‘Pallivetta’, the deity will be taken as procession to the Namaskaara Mandapam. At the Mandapam, the ‘thidambu’ of the presiding deity will be placed in a cradle like decorated cot for ‘palliyurakkam’. In the wee hours of Wednesday, the deity will be awakened with the noise of a calf. The eight-day long ‘Vrischikolsavam’ will conclude on Wednesday with the ‘Kaazcha Siveli’ and ‘Aarattu’ (holy bath) at the temple pond of Chakkamkulangara Siva Temple.  Considerable Increase in ‘Thrikketta Kaanikka’   On Saturday night, thousands of devotees turned up on the temple premises to witness the ‘Thrikketta Purappadu’. The total amount collected as kaanikka on Saturday night itself is Rs 5,24,049 and 7.450 of gold and nearly 5 gm of Silver.  In the last year, the total collection from the Thrikketta Kaanikka was Rs 4,64,000.
