Lucknow: It is the Bharatiya Janata Party all the way in Uttar Pradesh. In an unprecedented surge, the party which had won only nine seats in the previous Lok Sabha elections, has won 71 of the 80 seats in the state. It has surpassed its best ever tally of 57 out of 85 seats in the undivided Uttar Pradesh in 1998. The Congress has managed to register a victory in only 3 seats in the state.
BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has marked an impressive victory in the hard fought battle in Varanasi where he was up against Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
While the Congress has been decimated in the state, the Gandhis have managed to retain their seats in family bastion of Rae Bareli and Amethi where the party President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have registered a victory. Rahul won Amethi after a tough fight against BJP's Smriti Irani.
In what has come as a huge the Bahujan Samaj Party has not managed to win even a single seat in the state. The Samajwadi Party has managed to win only 6 seats.
According to the latest reports, some of the key winners are BJP's Kalraj Mishra from Deoria, former Congress leader Jagdambika Pal who recently joined the BJP from the Domariyaganj, BJP's Uma Bharti from Jhansi, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, who had to vacate his Varanasi seat for Narendra Modi from the Kanpur. Actor-turned politician Hema Malini has also won Mathura by a huge margin.
Maneka Sanjay Gandhi has won Pilibhit while her son Feroze Varun Gandhi has also won from Sultanpur. SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has won from Azamgarh as well as Mainpuri while his daughter-in law Dimple Yadav won Kannauj.
