KOCHI: Solar energy can be the energy for the future if utilised properly since conventional sources of energy are running dry, said R V G Menon, noted social activist and former chairman of ANERT (Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology). He was delivering the Science Day Lecture as part of the National Science Day celebrations organised by the Directorate of Public Relations and Publications and the Centre for Science Communication of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) on Wednesday. “Installing solar cells on rooftops can help popularise and decentralise power production. When conventional sources of energy such as petroleum are running dry, solar energy can be utilised to the hilt by proper changes in policy”.“The possibility of nuclear accidents, regardless of using the safest means in building the power plants, is a major deterrent for the nuclear option. Most ecological problems are caused by lack of foresight while implementing projects,” he said.
